Electronic drivers die before the lamp

Reviewed under Eng. Abdullah Al Balushi

Most of the time the LED chip is fine and it's the driver that has burned out; burying the driver in gypsum is a serious mistake.

Common mistakeThe wrong distance for a 24V driver

“You installed a great 24V strip, but the light fades towards the end? The mistake is the driver!”

The problem
Placing the driver (transformer) too far from the cove strip, causing voltage drop and weaker light.
Technical explanation
The driver should be close to the strip (no more than 3 m away), and if the run is longer than 5 m, it should be split into separate circuits.
The result
Cove lighting with even brightness from one end of the room to the other, with no fading.

Common mistakeLeaving lighting drivers with no maintenance access

“Hid the cove-lighting driver inside sealed gypsum? If it fails, you'll have to break your ceiling!”

The problem
Closing the gypsum décor completely over LED drivers that need periodic maintenance.
Technical explanation
Always leave maintenance openings, or place the drivers where they are easy to reach (behind the spotlight or in a nearby junction panel).
The result
Saving hundreds of rials in future costs of breaking and repainting gypsum.

Common mistakeIgnoring maintenance access

“Buried the Driver inside the gypsum? Get ready to break open the ceiling!”

The problem
Not providing maintenance access openings for after move-in
Technical explanation
Drivers reach the end of their life before the LED chip, so they must be somewhere easy to reach, or behind the Spot so they can be pulled out easily
The result
Maintenance for 0 rials instead of breaking and repainting the gypsum ceiling

Common mistakeCompromising on Driver quality

“Filming a Snap in the living room and seeing lines moving across the screen? Your lights are quietly harming your eyes!”

The problem
Cheap lighting gives off invisible Flicker that causes headaches
Technical explanation
The problem isn’t the LED chip, it’s the cheap “Driver”. A high-quality Driver keeps the current stable so the light is completely Flicker-free
The result
A healthy environment free of visual fatigue for you and your family

Common mistakeMixing magnetic track light brands

“Bought a magnetic track from one shop and the lights from another? Get ready for trouble!”

The problem
Magnetic track has no unified standard, and differing sizes between manufacturers prevent installation and cause short circuits.
Technical explanation
The Track, the fittings (Spots) and the drivers must be bought from the same supplier to guarantee matching power supply and dimensions.
The result
Protects the owner from wasting money on incompatible products.

Common mistakeNeglecting driver access hatches

“The contractor buried the concealed lighting driver in the gypsum? Get ready to break things!”

The problem
Drivers need periodic maintenance, and burying them means demolishing the décor.
Technical explanation
Leave access hatches nearby, or place drivers where they can easily be pulled out.
The result
Long-lasting décor and huge savings on maintenance costs.

Comparison220V strip vs 24V strip

“Buying an LED strip for cove lighting without knowing the difference in voltage? Careful, this mistake could be dangerous!”

The problem
Choosing a 220V strip for close or touchable locations because it is cheap and easy to install.
Technical explanation
220V is excellent for long runs but is not safe to touch directly. 24V is very safe and ideal for short runs, but needs a separate driver.
The result
Protecting the family and children from electric shock, and longer-lasting lighting.

ComparisonStandard (Magnetic) transformer vs smart electronic driver (DALI / Casambi)

“Building a smart villa, but your lighting drivers are dumb?”

The problem
Being unable to control light output and brightness (Dimming) because cheap drivers were chosen.
Technical explanation
Smart electronic drivers (such as DALI) allow smooth, flicker-free dimming and integration with smart home systems and phone apps.
The result
Full control of the villa's mood at the touch of a button on your phone. (Contact us to equip your villa with smart lighting.)
