A recessed fitting protects more than a surface one

Reviewed under Eng. Abdullah Al Balushi

Hiding the chip inside the black cavity of the fitting (Darklight) protects the eyes from glare to a great degree.

Common mistakeAiming light at glass and mirrors

“Got a spotlight hitting the windows at night? You're blinding your guests!”

The problem
Aiming lights at reflective surfaces such as glass creates distracting glare that blocks the view outside.
Technical explanation
Light should be aimed at walkways and opaque walls. Avoid aiming lights at windows at night entirely, so you can enjoy the view of the garden.
The result
A comfortable evening sitting and a clear view of the villa's garden without distraction.

Common mistakeLighting windows and mirrors

“Lighting your mirrors and windows to make your home look luxurious? You're blinding yourself!”

The problem
Aiming lights directly at glass and mirrors bounces the light back as very uncomfortable glare.
Technical explanation
Glass doesn't reflect light softly like painted walls do, so lighting should be from the side or hidden behind the mirror (Backlit) to avoid discomfort.
The result
Hotel-style bathrooms and corridors, without visual discomfort.

Common mistakeMixing reflector types in the ceiling

“Your ceiling has some lights that glare and some that are hidden? The ceiling now looks messy!”

The problem
Using “opal diffuser” fittings (which glow and spread light towards the eye) next to “deep reflector” fittings (hidden) in the same open space.
Technical explanation
In open spaces such as reception halls, the reflector type should be the same throughout (preferably the Darklight deep reflector) so the ceiling looks calm, as one piece.
The result
A clean, eye-friendly ceiling that raises the quality of the finish.

Common mistakeNo directional lighting for artwork

“Bought a painting worth thousands of rials and lit it with a standard downlight? You've practically switched off its beauty!”

The problem
Using diffused (Symmetrical) light that doesn't bring out the details of the art.
Technical explanation
Artwork needs Asymmetrical lighting or a spotlight aimed at 30° to bring out texture and colour without causing glare on the painting's glass.
The result
Turning the villa's walls into an elegant art gallery that catches every visitor's eye.

Common mistakeLighting artwork (Asymmetrical)

“Your expensive painting looks dull with a bright spot glaring in the middle?”

The problem
Using a standard (symmetrical) spotlight above paintings creates a harsh hotspot and distracting shadows.
Technical explanation
Paintings need asymmetrical fittings (Asymmetrical Wallwasher) that wash the whole painting softly without creating glare on its glass.
The result
Turning the villa's walls into a true art gallery.

Common mistakeMatte Diffuser fixtures in offices

“Installed a light with a matte white cover in your home office? That’s where your headache comes from!”

The problem
A white diffuser spreads light in all directions and causes glare that reflects on the laptop screen
Technical explanation
“Deep reflector” fixtures have a cut-off angle that blocks the uncomfortable light and reduces glare (UGR < 19), making them ideal for work
The result
Better focus, higher productivity and comfort for your eyes while working

Common mistakeBuying fixtures without Data Sheets

“Buying your villa’s Spots without seeing the spec sheet? That’s like buying a car without knowing its engine!”

The problem
Buying counterfeit goods that have no measurements for cut-off angle, UGR or efficiency
Technical explanation
Reliable fixtures come with a technical file that shows light output efficiency (LOR) and the life of the Heatsink
The result
A reliable investment that lasts for decades instead of yearly replacements

Common mistakeUsing surface-mounted fixtures as a cheap fix

“Concrete ceiling with commercial surface-mounted lights? You’ve ruined the luxury!”

The problem
Cheap surface-mounted fixtures lack anti-glare reflectors
Technical explanation
Modern Surface mounted fixtures come with aluminium cylinders and deep Darklight reflectors that rival the luxury of recessed fixtures and spare you the gypsum
The result
A contemporary architectural finish (Modern Industrial) that saves you the gypsum budget
